Pinellas County Lacrosse Adoption - We Need Your Support and Help

All Devils and Dragons Parents,

As many of you may know, the Saint Petersburg Lacrosse Club was originated under the premise that it would provide itself as conduit for adopting and supporting the sport of lacrosse to the Public and Private school systems. In the recent two years our programs have made great strides in that direction, with some Pinellas county high schools beginning the adoption process as a club sport and being affiliated in "name only" with the high school. Unfortunately, there has been limited support in "formally" adopting lacrosse into the high schools, especially within the public school system. Currently, we are at a standstill moment and cannot get the powers at be to help move this agenda along. This has been due to many factors and compliance issues.

However, it appears adoption into the private school systems is on track and our Devils/Dragons programs have help catalyze this movement. From the public school perspective, there are challenges with the status quo and other compliance concerns. We have been successful in addressing many of the compliance concerns via the club level adoption, but we are still having a hard time challenging the status quo and the push for formal adoption into the Pinellas school system.

In order to effectively mitigate the challenges and push for formal adoption of lacrosse into the public school system, a motivated group of parents, coaches, and other enthusiasts are organizing an effort focused on convincing the Pinellas County School Board to accept lacrosse as a varsity sport and they need our support.  So far they have met with the Superintendant of Schools, on Friday they are meeting with the County's Athletic Director, and on May 22 they are putting on a presentation for the School Board.

We are sure that all of you realize the many positive aspects of this wonderful game.   Getting lacrosse accepted as a varsity sport by our public school system would be a huge step forward for the development and growth of the sport in our region.

We need our families (with lacrosse players of all ages) to get involved in this effort.  Here is what you can do to help:

  • Join their Facebook page "Pinellas for Lacrosse" and post positive content.
  • Contact Michael Guju, offer to get involved in the effort and ask to get on the email distribution list, his email address is .
  • Attend and participate in the coordination meetings, the next one is 6 pm at Tuesday, May 15th at Homewood Suites by Hilton at 2233 Ulmerton Road, Clearwater, Florida 33762 (just east of Roosevelt Blvd).
  • Attend the Pinellas County School Board Meeting on May 22nd.  The group will be putting a presentation on for the Board and they need a lot of lacrosse supporters to be there.  Updates regarding this will be posted on the Facebook page and through email blasts.

If anyone has professional skills that can help our club coordinate in this movement, please let us know and feel free to contact and/or , so we can provide you the background necessary to be effective in this ongoing challenge.

Thanks,

Coach Kerry

Tournament / Travel Team - We are starting to gear up for our early Summer Tournament Teams. We plan to enter a U9, U13, and U15 team this season. Please be on the look out for email related to this. We plan to do these teams for the months of May and June with planning for a couple of tournaments in the late-Fall. We will send out a formal announcement prior to the end of February. In terms of planning, we estimate that the kids will play between 18-20 games over 4-5 weeks and it is estimated to cost $350-$400 per player to participate. The travel team format is like a whole Spring Season consolidated into 4-5 weeks. It will be a fun time! Just ask many of the kids and parents who participated last year.

Here is a sneak peek at the uniforms, which will match the Spring Season's Game shorts.
